Abstract

The Vertical File is a collection of background information on a large variety of topics represented in the collections held by the Dole Archives. It has been assembled and maintained throughout the years by Archives staff.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Dole Archives Vertical File serves as a source of basic background information on a wide variety of people, subjects, events, pieces of legislation, campaigns, and organizations represented in the Dole collections. It contains a wide variety of document types like news clippings and printouts of online articles, pamphlets, press releases, speeches, correspondence, bills, and copies from the collection. Organized alphabetically, the Vertical File is intended to be a quick reference tool that provides a brief introduction to a topic.

Collection Historical Note

The Vertical File has been assembled and maintained by archives staff throughout the years. In the past it has encompassed things like donor files and administrative records in addition to background files meant to complement the Dole collections. In 2012, all donor files were removed and united with the rest of the donor files. In Fall 2014 the Vertical File was re-housed, verified against the previous finding aid, and weeded for non-pertinent records. In recent years, the Vertical File has not been added to as extensively in the past; therefore, very current subjects may not be well represented.

Access Restrictions: This collection is open for research.

Use Restrictions: Copyright restrictions apply in different ways to different kinds of materials. Some of the documents and other historical materials in the Dole Archive are in the public domain and may be reproduced and used in any way. However, there are other materials that carry a copyright interest that must be used according to the provisions of Title 17 of the U.S. Code. The Dole Archive issues a warning concerning copyright restrictions to every researcher who requests copies of documents. Although the copyright law is under constant redefinition in the courts, it is ultimately the responsibility of the researcher to properly use copyrighted materials.
