To: Bob 1945_4_29 From: Mom [2 page letter] Date: 4-29-1945 Russell Kansas 4-29-45. Dear Bob:- Forgive me son as I didn’t write you last nite [sic]. I think perhaps had you been here yesterday & experienced the thrill & let down we did here in the United States, & in this little old town of ours, it was the blowing of whistles, the train in here at the time almost made us deaf- about three minutes after seven, very few people were dry eyed, we were happy & sad, but for only a few minutes when we started hearing it was only an unfortunate rumor so we have been very tc upset. They anounced [sic] a while ago that it would be a matter of hours. before [sic] we mite hear the news again. I sure wish we could but no more fooling. Daddy went to church with me this morning- Rev. Jenkins asked about you- I saw Shorty St. Aubyn & shook hands with him, he is quite a bit leanerer [sic] than he was- but looks awfully nice. Margaret says to call her as soon as we possibly can hear as she wants to let Philip hear, she says, Philip says he feels like such a heel with you over seas & him out in Calif. But that’s where they put him & he’s doing what they want him to do- Daddy went after the mail this morning, but no mail. Jake is back & he & Daddy are ordering some doors for the fire place, we aren’t getting along very fast as material is so hard to get, but well get it ready soon-in time for a steak fry when you get home. Margaret said Raustenstrause- do you know who I mean is to be sent to Rhode Island & out soon-. his sister was here & she asked about you & all the boys that were here when they lived here. Jimmie got another deferment so his worries are over for a while. I hope Kenney doesn’t make a bad move but you know he’s probably geting [sic] very tired of being in one spot for so long & I guess we can’t blame him for that. he’s in a dirty, hot spot, but I don’t think its quite as dangerous as some places are of course with their hottest weather before them if that’s possible I can’t [2] blame him for wanting to move. I only hope he’s lucky in his move. Earnie dropped in a few minutes ago & wondered if we had any letters to mail & wanted us to come up for a while- but I still have a letter to write to Kenney and I should write to N.J.- guess she’s getting along alrite- she wants us to have the Fireplace finished so when she comes home she can have a party- she’ll be gone about six more weeks we miss her a lot as she’s always usually around ---- This after noon Baxter & us drove down to view a B29 that won’t be going to Toyeko Tokyo but the boys are all safe except one had a broken leg thanks to their parachutes- this happened Sat. morning so we has a very exciting day- Sat. I don’t think they will blow any more whistles until they are certain of whats, what-. Bob my roses are growing wonderfull [sic], I planted about six dozen penoies [sic] Sat. before the news- my Gladiols [sic] are up- so everything off to a grand start. I only hope you boys get home to enjoy these soon the clover is getting quite pretty in fact- Daddy did his first mowing today & the Dandelions are still growing. My tulips are O.K. too & I had them planted all around the fence. Bob I hope your alrite [sic]- & having a good long rest- take it easy as we want you to get along alrite-and I’m sure you will- it seems as tho [sic] the mail is getting very slow- ge Kenney hasn’t been getting his boxes or anything- & if he moves he may never get them or at least not while theyre [sic] any good, he’s sending his watch home as you know since Daddy sent you his letter. Betty Hooper received the sad news that her husband was killed in action- they were only married a short time ago- but & he only went over sometime in February- another tragedy- they just anounced [sic] that Japan had sunk one of our Hospital ships- such an inhuman thing for them to do if only they’d end this in Germany it wouldn’t tale long over on Japan at least they could turn all hands to one job- Well Bob I hope we have a letter tomorrow telling us your O.K. & are receiving your mail & several of the numerous boxes on the way. I’ll get another box off to you this week with cheese etc again. I do hope Bob your feeling alrite [sic]- its bad enuff [sic] to be so far away from home with none of the comforts of home much less to be feeling bad, but since your in good hands I’m sure you’ll be getting out of there soon, not to soon as you need ----- some rest- Good nite honey & Good Luck.
