Description:
To: Folks 1943_8_29 From: Kenney [5 page letter] Date: 8-29-1943 8-29-43 Dear folk’s: Well I finally got enough tome to write you a few lines, today is sunday and I don’t have anything to do, I have really been busy, all week, Monday I had K.P. and Wednesday room orderly, and we had two night hikes, and two in the daytime. We got your package last Sunday, and really appreciated everything. The last hike we took was 4 miles in 47 minutes. Dad knows how hard it is with a full field pack so I don’t have to tell you, we lost a lot of the men who had to fall out. My leg didn’t hold up so good but I made it. I don’t know what happened to it but it just got weak I Page “2” guess I am not used to walking so much it is ok. now. I think we get paid the first so you should get some money for me. I still have a little left. I will let you know after payday if I have enough to get by, as yet I still haven’t been to town but we are going this afternoon. All I am going for is a bottle of milk – this is one thing I really miss with my meals. I think I told you that we had 17 week’s of Basic instead of 12. I don’t know how many week’s that bob has but I think it is 16 or 17. Starting tomorrow I have exactly 12 week’s left, just as many week’s left as I had Page 3 when my Basic Started. About the Radio Some boy in our hut has a radio now so when my Radio gets here I will give it to Bob to use, it should be here today. How is everyone back home, I suppose all the kids are getting ready for school, I sure wish I was there to go back with them, tell everyone hello, Mom if you see Ethel before I get to write to her tell her the peaches got smashed in shipment and tell her thank’s for me. The way we talk here we may get a 14 day furlough when our basic is over I am praying & hoping that I am lucky enough to get one. Mom if you want too send me some lemons they are Page 4 just the thing down here to quinch your thirst. I have really learned a lot since I have been here I didn’t know I could learn so much in such a short time, if I could get very good grades on my test, a and have “Odium” see the commanding officer at Walker I might be able to have it fixed so as I can be stationed at the Hospital there, It would really be swell to be so close to home. Well I must close for now, but keep on writing and I will do my best to write whenever I can. Love Kenney. Dad don’t work too hard at the station, and Mom you take it easy, don’t do any more than you have too. “over” “Page 5” You asked about Bob’s foot I really think it is ok now, and He is getting along swell, Don’t worry about us we are still kicking – My weight 163 Is Billy Ingham home yet – give him my address.
