Description:
To: Folks 1943_8_13 From: Kenney [3 page letter] Date: 8-13-1943 8-13-43 Friday Dear folk’s: Well I don’t have very much time, so this letter is going to be rather short. We were supposed to take a 22 mile hike today but they changed the schedule, so I don’t think we are going to have it. I saw Bob last night and he said he would write you a letter so I didn’t write last night. There isn’t very much to say, except it is still plenty hot here, I got a letter from Gladys and I am going to try to answer it today if I have time. I still owe Page 2 Grace a letter and I owe Della & Jake one, I hope I get them answered today. I got paid yesterday and I got $23.00. They took out for bonds & insurance but not for laundry or my allotment they will be taken out next month. I am going to put $10.00 in this letter so I will have something to come home on if I get a furlough when my basic training is over. I sure do hope I get one. The food here is still getting better but I don’t seem to be gaining weight as yet. The Page 3 Water here is terrible and we have to have salt put in our Canteen’s every time we use them which is practically all the time and the chow house puts salt in our water & coffee so I get plenty of salt water to drink. The reason for this is because it is so hot and we sweat so much that all the salt leaves our system and our fatigue clothes are just caked with white salt. Well I must close as we are about to do something, probably drill or scouting & patrolling. Love, Pvt. Kenney
