Dear folk’s:
Today is Saturday and it really [sic] hot here. I wrote a letter to sis & Larry last night. I hope I had the right address so they can answer me soon, we start basic Monday so I won’t have any time at all, the longest hike that we have is a mere 28 28 miles and we have to make it in seven hours with a fulll field pack which weigh’s 68 pounds and our shoes weigh 3 pounds. I sure wish I was home so I could work for dad today, instead of being here at this place.
There isn’t really much I can say except they told us today what our basic would consist of, our first hike is four miles long and from there on we add a mile every day and sometimes we will hike of the same distance but that longest hike will be the worst of all, but I think I can make it o.k. Please send me two pair of those heavy wool sox, to help fill up my shoes, so my feet won’t get so sore and by the way my first sargent asked me if I could get him some gas couponds [sic] so please send me all you can get as it might help me get a furlough at the end of my basic training, so send all you can get, maybe if you asked Jack Critzl for some of those C couponds [sic] he would send them down to me. it’s [sic] worth a try. To get a furlough from here would be worth anything. Also see about the Russell papers, and mom you can send me some more cookies anytime. Well I have to go to work now so I will write as soon as I can.
Tell all hello & to write. Love,
Kenney
