Description:
To: Bob 1945_4_19 From: Mom [2 page letter] Date: 4-19-1945 Russell Kansas 4-19-45 Dear Bob: Well again, I’ll try writing a few lines, there’s a lot happening but seems so useless & all considering the news over there. I’ve listened to every broadcast since the Monday morning news! I just don’t see why they don’t give up & quit this terrible thing but I really think the German’s have committed so many terrible things that they are afraid to give up & the ones responsible for this wholesale murder know theyre [sic] doomed & as long as they cant prevent the end the longer theyre [sic] O.K. The papers have carried news of the 5th army advancing in Italy & also of the tenth mountain Division advance I only Pray [sic] you are safe. I couldn’t help but think of you when you were in school playing Football [sic] when I read the news of you’re the 5th army advancing under heavy enemy resistance yard by yard- but I know the field &, danger is great but surely this can’t last & I Pray it is God’s will to bring you home safe & never to return to this terrible thing called war again.. [sic] Today is my Birthday. I didn’t even remember or that is F-he was Glorias [sic] & Larry’s Wedding Aniversary [sic], since Monday I’ve thot [sic] of nothing but you & your safety & I was Happy with the Gift you had remembered to have N.J. help you get- it was so nice of you & you shouldn’t even thin k of things like that as you’ve enuff [sic] to think about It is a beautiful Handel & one that will last a life time. Thanks a million son- I received a letter back yesterday that I had written you in Jan. with some picture. I --- Kenney- I’ll send the snaps in this letter. also one from N.J. to you returned-the one she had told what we ---had all received for xmas & I sent [2] Several packages to the same address- but I’m wondering moving like you are if you’ll ever get your packages now. I sure hope you get some of that fudge & that Peanut Cluster it would taste pretty good to you I imagine. Daddy & N.J. are over to Bessies [sic] rite [sic] now, this is also Bessies & Jimmies [sic] Anniversary- but Jimmie has been about sick with a cold. Anyway I think we’ll postpone all the celebrating till after the war. Bessie [sic] N.J. & I took L.R. [sic] to Salina to see a circus- N.J. & I shopped while they went to the circus I guess L.h. [sic] liked it O.K.- I bought Daddy a new shirt & Larry Roy a new white pair of shoes-N.J. reminded me of G. & Larry’s Aniversary [sic] so Daddy wired them 25.00 [sic], Daddy has a chance to sell the interest he bought for you boys for $100 per acre. I think he has – 80 acres in all now & personally I think it would be a smart thing to do- they would be enuff [sic] to let you boys finish your education without worry. Ben Rein turned it down, but he can afford it of course it mite [sic] be worth a lot more later- he will be writing to you about it I imagine. Daddy thinks Gloria & Larry will be calling home soon- but I doubt that. Angeline was here Tuesday nite [sic] with a letter she had from you- said it was the 1st time she’d laughed for a month, she really been broken up since she heard from her fiancé bad news of Johnnies [sic] death. I wasn’t here while she was here but Dad said she was here quite a while anyway she got a kick out of your letter. Better not plan on too much money as out of your Royalty I’m afraid Daddy was a little excited when he was telling about it-it is worth more than t [sic] was- Well Son Good luck & Good nite- hope this letter finds you well & safe & that this thing is over shortly- Love –Mom-
